Paintings as Clues - Watercolor

PAINTINGS AS CLUES

This series started when I began to experiment with watercolor and acrylic on brown wrapping paper. I developed a layering process similar to watercolor methods, first laying down a cloudy pale field of color. Then I created an all-over pattern of forms, perhaps leaves or vines and finally added the iconic objects floating on top.

During that time I began to dream of the game of Clue and of mysteries in general; mysteries without definite answers. I kept a dream journal and the dreams began to feed into the series. When this body of work was exhibited at Commencement Gallery in Tacoma, WA, I displayed portions of my dream journal and invited the viewer to interpret the paintings according to their own dreams or associative thoughts.
